The other day you told me emphatically that you were “not a little baby”.
The very fact that you can project your will in such a focused and forceful manner made me agree. You are not a little baby.
And then you fell asleep on our bed while I was cleaning up and you illustrated that while you are a big girl, you are still a little girl.
Yesterday your mother and I dropped our bikes off at the bike shop for a tune-up. While your mom talked to the guy running the shop, you and I tried out some little bikes. While you are almost big enough to ride the smallest bikes, you are not quite there yet.
Inevitably, you were disappointed when we left the store without a bike for you. We explained to you that you were not quite big enough yet, but that when you were we would buy you a bike.
You were satisfied with that response, and indicated that you wanted the large pink vintage beach cruiser in the window. We told you that you would need to be a lot bigger to get that bike.
Today, when we arrived at the shop to pick up our bikes we had barely pulled up to the curb when from the back of the car issues the call “I am bigger! I get my bike today!”
You aren’t quite that big yet, but it sure seems like it will be soon.
